Know
(사실, 정보에 대해) 알고있는 상태
- I know the way there.
- I know his phone number.
- I know where she lives.
- I don’t know why there are so many people there.
Understand
이해하는 상태
- I understand how you feel. 나는 당신이 어떤 마음인지 알아요.
- I understand why she did that but I don’t agree with her decision.
- I don’t understand what it means.
Find out
(사실, 정보를) 몰랐다가 아는 상태로 넘어가는 그 변화를 말함
- 난 그걸 어제서야 알았어요 → 여기에 know, understand는 절대 사용하면 안됨 → I found out about that just yesterday.
Figure out
(어떤 상황, 문제에서 그 해결책을) 몰랐다가 아는 상태로 넘어가는 그 변화를 말함
- I figured out how to use it. 어떻게 사용하는지 알았어
- I figured out how to get there.
- I figured out how set up the alarm.
Realize
(모든 과정이 머리속에서만 이뤄짐) 깨닫다
- I finally realized what the problem was.
Notice
“알리다”는 의미가 아니다. 알리다는
notify 다. notification = 알림(외부와의 접촉이 전제되는) 무언갈 보고 변화점, 특이점을 알아차림
realize는 모든 과정이 머릿속에서만 이뤄지고, notice는 외부 대상이 전제됨이 다름
- I saw my friend at school today and I noticed (that) she had gotten a haircut. 오늘 학교에서 친구를 봤는데 머리를 잘랐더라고(내가 직접보고 변화를 알아치림을 나타냄).
- She came out with a new album, and I noticed (that) her style had changed a little bit. 그녀가 새 앨범을 냈는데 스타일이 좀 바꼈더라고.
- I ran into my friend on the street this morning, and I noticed (that) she looked a little different.
- I noticed you were drinking a lot of coffee today, did you have trouble sleeping last night? 당신 오늘 커피를 많이 마시는거 같더라고, 어제 밤 잠을 설쳤나요?
Recognize
(무엇인지, 누군지) 알다
- This morning, someone said hello to me on the street, but I didn’t recognize him.
- Do you recognize this author? 이 작가 누군지 아세요?
- She looked very familiar, but I couldn’t recognize her.
- If you saw your boyfriend’s handwriting, would you recognize it? 당신 남친 손글씨를 보면 알아보시겠어요?
Be aware of
존재 여부에 대해 알다
- I wasn’t aware of that policy.
- They were aware of the rules.
- They were not aware of the situation at the time. 그들은 그 당시에 그 상황을 인지하지 못하고 있었어요.
Be familiar with
잘 알고있는 상태, 잘 숙지하고 있는 상태
know well 은 보통 사람에 대해 잘 안다고 할때만 사용(I know him well)하고 상황, 물건에 대해선 be familiar with 을 사용한다.
- I’m not very familiar with this topic.
- Are you familiar with this kind of situation?
Tell
판단하다
- I can’t tell what it says. 뭐라고 써져있는지 모르겠어(지식문제가 아니라 악필이라 못알아봐서 판단이 안됨)
- I can’t tell the difference!
- I can’t tell how they are different.
- Can you tell what this is? Do you think it’s water?
- Do you know what this is? 은 틀린 표현이다. 지금 이 순간에 바로 보고 무엇인지 판단이 되냔 질문이므로 Can you tell ~ 이 맞다.
